To specify, female characters dressed in tissue with breasts that defied physics and common sense. My experience with non-Western MMOs has been of the drive-by variety, seeing screenshots and making on-the-fly judgments based upon an aesthetic style that I frequently found unnerving. Likewise I adored that you could effectively level through crafting, rather than facing the typical grind. I found these ideas a welcome buck against the trend of linearity plaguing the majority of MMOs these days. Freeform player economy with an emphasis on crafting? The ability to own houses and farms and, more importantly, have that be a major aspect of the game? And the boats, oh goodness, you could have boats and engage in the swashbuckling joy that is a pirate’s life? Complete with the ramifications of it, including a trial and jailing system? When I first heard about ArcheAge about a year ago, I was intrigued by the premise. My attempts at making my thoughts and reactions coherent are beneath the cut. At the very least, I’ve been able to address some of my concerns and decide whether it is an opportunity worth following.

I’ve had some time to run around in it and form something of an opinion on the beta. Not because the game is bad, but because of the questionable decisions Trion has made in reaction to widespread account compromises in late August and in regards to their cash shop, which devalues character crafting and cooperation by offering crafting supplies on their cash shop.ĪrcheAge’s third closed beta, spiritedly named Blood & Bounty, launched Thursday afternoon and will be ending tomorrow at 1 PM EST.

At this point, I would discourage you from investing in this game and in Trion.
